60% market share in russia, room to grow. Despite tougher comps in 2021, 77% revenue growth for Yandex in 2021 as a whole is expected, and this stock is well on its way.

Yandex is the biggest tech company in Russia, which is currently experiencing a bull market. It blends multiple tech companies into a single platform, which helps reduce the downside risk of a single company performing poorly. Furthermore, Yandex owns a large stake of Yandex taxi, a ride share service that helps them diversify their offerings.
DUKE_INTERLAGOS_PARTNERS • Duke Emerging Market Portfolio Management (Fall 2021) • Oct 2021
Yandex is a Russian tech conglomerate with interests in the search engine, transportation, e-commerce, and mobile application industries, among others. Uniquely, their investments in international markets also add to our attraction toward this stock. Recently, Yandex expanded their cloud infrastructure and investments into Germany. The company also revealed an autonomous vehicle project for taxis in Moscow and a grocery delivery service, in addition to several FinTech developments. Today, they announced a purchase of an e-scooter company in Israel to take advantage of growth seen in the trend of micro-mobility. We believe that its strong position in the Russian tech space, in addition to their international exposure in many industries, will grow over time, leading to some hefty returns. This will act as exposure to the Russian economy, without entering the oil space, which we see as bearish currently.

It’s recent acquisition of Acropol bank will fuel growth of it’s fintech ambitions, and the company’s acquisition of uber’s food delivery services in Russia will consolidate its position as the lead food delivery service in the country.

This is one of the 6 largest tech firms outside of the USA and China measured by market capitalization. This is why this fits in our investment strategy.
EmergeCapital • Duke Emerging Market Portfolio Management (Fall 2020) • Oct 2020
Overall we believe that we have too high of a position in Yandex. It is providing us too much exposure to a market that is not performing too well. That being said, this motivation was not based on losses but rather a desire to diversify into other sectors of the Russian economy. Having a position that is 10% of out portfolio is not very attractive when we are trading emerging equities which are generally fairly volatile.
